WEBSITES & CUSTOM APPS

Custom app development in Lucknow: software built around how your business runs

A custom app is software written for one business's own process — a booking screen for a clinic, an order form for dealers, a fee register for a coaching institute — rather than a generic product everyone adapts to.

RX Design Hub in Vikas Nagar, Lucknow builds these as web apps that open in any browser, or as mobile apps where that suits the use. Each app is planned screen by screen, built after your feedback, tested on your real data and ready 15–20 days after we receive all your feedback. Quote on WhatsApp.

Apps are the newer half of the studio's newer service line: the same design desk that lays out websites, diaries and stationery for 2,500+ companies now plans and codes the small tools those companies run on. This page explains what counts as a custom app, the ten kinds we are asked for most, how a web app differs from a mobile app, what to prepare, and who owns what at the end.

What counts as a custom app

Every business in Lucknow already runs on software of a kind: a register at the counter, an Excel sheet the accountant keeps, a WhatsApp group where dealers send orders and someone re-types them into a bill. These work until the business grows past the person who holds them in their head. A custom app replaces that register or sheet with a screen only your staff can log into, with the fields you actually use, the checks you wish the register had, and a report that is ready at month-end without anyone adding columns.

It is not an off-the-shelf product with your logo on it. Ready-made software is built for an average business and sold to thousands; you adjust your work to fit it, pay for features you never open, and still keep a parallel register for the things it cannot do. A custom app starts from your process notes. If your dealers order in cartons but your stock is counted in pieces, the app converts. If a receipt needs the branch head's approval before printing, that step exists. If your staff read Hindi more comfortably than English, the labels are in Hindi.

The scale we mean is a tool that removes one recurring headache well, not a large enterprise system. The studio's own print clients, for instance, follow their order's stage in the RX Design Hub client app instead of phoning for updates; that is the size of problem a custom app is built for.

Ten kinds of app, and the problem each one removes

Most briefs fall into one of these. Many businesses need two of them joined — a booking screen for customers and a dashboard for the owner — and that is quoted as one app.

Typical custom apps for Lucknow businesses, the recurring problem each solves and who usually asks for it
App typeThe problem it removesWho usually asks
Booking and appointment appPhone lines engaged at ten in the morning, double bookings, people arriving for a slot nobody noted. The app shows live slots, confirms the booking and can send a reminder the day before.Clinics, salons, gyms, consultants, service centres
Order-taking and dealer-order appDealers sending orders as voice notes and photographs of handwritten lists. Each dealer gets a login, your price list, their order history and a confirmation.Manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers
Inventory and stock registerStock counted in a notebook, mismatches found only at audit. The app records inward, outward and transfers, and raises a reorder alert.Shops, godowns, pharma stockists, workshops
Attendance and field-staff appField attendance taken on trust, visit reports arriving late or never. Check-in with location, a short visit note and a photograph where needed.Sales teams, service engineers, NGOs with field workers
Admin dashboard and reportsThe owner asks three people for today's figures and gets three answers. The dashboard reads from one set of data and shows it on one screen.Any business with more than one branch or team
Lead and customer management (CRM-style)Enquiries scattered across WhatsApp, calls and a diary, follow-ups forgotten. Every lead listed with its stage, next action and owner.Builders, institutes, agencies, dealers
Billing and quotation toolQuotations typed fresh each time, with errors in totals and GST. The tool builds a quote from your rate list and turns it into an invoice when accepted.Event planners, printers, contractors, traders
Membership and fee trackerFees due this month found by flipping through a register. Who has paid, who is due and who lapsed, with reminders sent on schedule.Gyms, coaching institutes, clubs, housing societies
Student and parent appPaper notices that do not reach home, attendance queries by phone. Each parent sees their child's attendance, notices, homework and fee status.Schools, coaching centres, hostels
Delivery and dispatch trackingCustomers calling to ask where their order is. Dispatch staff update the stage once and every customer sees it on their own screen.Distributors, caterers, print and packaging units, online sellers

Web app or mobile app: which one do you need?

A web app is software that opens in a browser — on a phone, a tablet or an office desktop — behind a login. There is nothing to install; you send staff a link and a password, and when a screen is improved everyone has the new version the next time they open it. It works on whatever phones your team already carries. For most back-office tools, such as registers, dashboards, order forms and quotation builders, a web app is the right choice and the quicker one to put in people's hands.

A mobile app is installed on the phone itself. It suits uses where the phone's own features matter: a field worker marking a visit with the location recorded, a photograph taken straight into the record, a notification that must reach a parent even when they have not opened anything. It also suits customer-facing tools where you want your icon on their home screen.

Many businesses end up with both from one project: a web app for the office and a simpler mobile app for the people on the road or the customers. We suggest the shape after hearing the process, not before, and we say plainly when a web app alone is enough.

How an app is built: plan, feedback, build, test, hand-over

The 15–20 day count starts once your feedback on the plan is complete, because the plan is where an app succeeds or fails.

  1. Requirement notes

A WhatsApp chat or a meeting at your office or ours. We write down the process as it runs today: who does what, on which register, and where it goes wrong. You correct the notes.

  2. Screen-by-screen plan

Simple wireframes of every screen: what a staff member sees, what they tap, what the owner sees in the report. Nothing is coded until this plan is agreed.

  3. Your feedback

You and the people who will actually use the app go through the plan and mark what is missing or unnecessary. The 15–20 day clock starts when this feedback is complete and the quote is confirmed with the advance.

  4. Build

The screens are coded as planned, with logins and roles, and shown to you on a private link as they take shape.

  5. Test with your real data

We load a month of your actual entries — a stock sheet, a fee register, last week's orders — and run the app the way your staff will. Corrections from this test are part of the build, not an extra.

  6. Hand-over and training

Access, code and data are handed to you with a short training session on WhatsApp or a video call, plus written notes for whoever will administer the app.

What to prepare before the first call

An app brief is mostly about your process, not about technology. The more of this you bring, the shorter the planning stage.

  • Process notes in plain language: the steps an order, booking, student or enquiry goes through today, from first contact to closure
  • The registers and Excel sheets you currently use; a photograph of one filled page is enough, because the columns tell us the fields
  • Who will log in — owner, manager, counter staff, field staff, dealers, parents or customers — and what each should and should not see
  • The reports you want at the end of a day, a week or a month, in the form you would like to read them
  • Printed outputs the app must produce: receipts, challans, quotations, ID slips, with a sample of the current format
  • Rules that trip people up now: credit limits, approval steps, discount caps, holidays, branch-wise stock
  • Whether labels should be in English, Hindi or both, and which phones your staff use

If part of the process is still undecided, say so; the plan stage exists to settle it. We can also sit at your premises anywhere in Lucknow for an hour and watch the work as it happens, which often reveals a step nobody thought to mention.

Your data and your code stay yours

Two questions decide whether a small business should commission software: who owns the data, and what happens if the developer disappears. Our answer to both is the same. The data the app collects — customers, orders, fees, stock — belongs to you and sits in an account in your name. The code written for your app is handed to you at the end of the project, with notes, so that any developer you choose later can read it and continue. Hosting and domain are purchased in your name, exactly as they are for the websites we build.

Because the code and the data are yours, running costs are the hosting you pay directly and any further work you ask us to do, agreed in writing on WhatsApp before it starts. Registers can export to Excel, so your records are never locked inside a screen.

A worked example: a distributor's order app

This is an illustrative brief, not a client case study. A distributor of packaged foods in Transport Nagar supplies about 180 retail shops across Lucknow and Barabanki. Orders arrive by phone and WhatsApp between seven and ten each morning, two staff type them into a billing program, and errors — a wrong pack size, a shop already over its credit limit — are discovered when the van is on the road.

The requirement notes take one visit to the godown. The plan has four screens for shops (log in, see their own price list and last five orders, place an order, see the dispatch stage), three for the office (today's orders by route, credit-limit flags, a picking list per van) and one dashboard for the owner. Feedback from the two order-desk staff adds a field for free-scheme quantities that nobody had mentioned. Once that feedback is in, the build and the test on a fortnight of real orders take the usual 15–20 days. The staff are trained on a video call; shops receive a WhatsApp message with their login. The billing program stays where it is; the app only removes the morning re-typing and the road-side surprises.

Website and app together

Many briefs are really two: a public website that brings in the enquiry, and an app behind a login that handles it. Built together, the two share one design, one set of data and one login for your staff, and the enquiry form on the site writes straight into the lead list in the app. The website page explains the 8–10 day site build; quoted together, the site usually goes live first and the app follows once feedback on its plan is complete. The same design desk prints the stationery and bill books that an app often sits beside, so the receipt the app prints and the one your counter hands over carry the same logo.

Planned in Vikas Nagar, used across Lucknow

Most app work starts with a conversation at your desk, and that is easier when the studio is in the same city. We are in Sector 3, Vikas Nagar, and already travel to offices in Gomti Nagar, Hazratganj and Alambagh for print clients every week; an app brief fits the same visit. Working hours are 10:00 to 18:30, Friday closed, and the contact page has the map pin.

Businesses in Kanpur, Barabanki, Ayodhya or further away are served over WhatsApp, calls and screen-share in the same steps; the plan and the private build link do not need anyone to travel. The sector pages describe where an app fits a particular kind of business: coaching institutes, clinics, dealers, gyms and salons and start-ups building a first version. The founder, Shubham Kumar, takes the first call himself, and the approval process is written down rather than remembered.

Questions Lucknow businesses ask before commissioning an app

What is the difference between a custom app and ready-made software?

Ready-made software is built for an average business; you adapt your work to it. A custom app is planned from your own process notes, has only the screens you need, and is handed to you as code and data you own. For a small team it is usually simpler to run.

How long does a custom app take?

Fifteen to twenty days after we receive all your feedback on the screen-by-screen plan. The requirement notes and the plan before that take as long as your side needs to review them, often a week, sometimes a day.

Do we need a mobile app, or will a web app do?

For office registers, dashboards and order forms a web app is enough: it opens in any browser on any phone without installing anything. A mobile app suits field staff, photo capture, location and notifications. We suggest the shape after hearing the process.

What will the app cost?

There is no price list. The quote depends on the number of screens, the roles that log in, the reports and any connections to other systems. Send your process notes and a photograph of your current register on WhatsApp and a written quote follows.

Who owns the data and the code?

You do. Data sits in an account in your name, hosting is bought in your name, and the code is handed over at the end with notes so another developer could continue it. There is no licence fee for using your own app.

Can the app be in Hindi?

Yes. Labels, buttons and messages can be in Hindi, English or both, with the language set per user. Printed outputs such as receipts and challans can carry Hindi text as well.
